Unable to create groups - mysql problem?

With Timetrex installed on a Windows 7 PC using postgresql, everything is working properly. However, when installed on a Linux VM using mysql, I'm unable to add employee groups from the Employee:Groups menu. There is no error, it just does nothing. Also, it freezes when trying to import employees from a csv file with "create groups automatically" selected.
