Accruals not accruing

We have Sick and Vacation time accrual policies that were not building accrual records. Thinking that it might fix the problem, I changed the accrual policies to frequency:Weekly and day-of-week:Sunday figuring that the cron job would handle it. However, that isn't the case. As we're still learning and we only use TimeTrex to report (we do the actual payroll in Quickbooks at this time), several pay periods haven't been closed. Does the cron job need the periods to be locked or closed before it does it's thing? I was able to use the "Calculate Accruals Immediately For The Following Dates" feature to manually calculate the accruals but isn't it supposed to run automatically. If someone can explain the mechanics of the accrual process and/or give me some ideas as to where to look I'd appreciate it.

The accruals should work automatically, however its directly dependent on your maintenance jobs running properly, and that the accruals are of course assigned to a policy group.
