Accounting for Breaks

Post by WebSolutions »

We really like your payroll system, but we've run into one stumbling block. In our company we offer our employees paid breaks (15 minutes) as required by law. However, your system takes employees off pay when the breaks are logged. We need our employees to log their breaks because some have been taking breaks closer to 20 minutes whereas we only pay for 15 minute breaks. I found some tips in the forums about making policies for paid breaks but it appears these breaks are fixed amounts of time. This works some of the time, but other times our employees don't take breaks and sometimes they take breaks less than the allotted time. In these cases we don't want a 15 minute break added to their timecard because it incorrectly tallies their accumulated time for the pay period (and we won't be paying them for this). Do you have any idea how we might resolve this issue? Perhaps there is a way to change breaks so they don't take employees off the clock, but just register as being on break? Thanks for your help!

Unfortunately in a situation as complex as the one you described TimeTrex doesn't fully work. Even if TimeTrex had the option where breaks didn't take them off the clock, its not really going to help you. Because if they take longer then 15 minutes, you would still pay them for that time.

The only real option is to have us do some custom development to add Break policies for you that would do exactly what you want.

Since there would be a fairly substantial cost to this, (its quite complex) I would recommend contacting some of the people who responded to this thread:

and asking if they would want to share the custom development costs. Since this is a feature that other customers could utilize, we will also share a high percentage of the cost, but there will still be a couple thousand required by other parties to cover the remainder.
