Backup procedure on Windows machines

Post by marcs »

What is the best way to backup TimeTrex when installed on a Windows workstation or server?

Does the database service need to be stopped in order to run a successful backup with a product like BackupExec or Acronis Backup and Recovery?

Thank you,
Marc

If you are using TimeTrex v3.0 and you can simply backup the TimeTrex directory, as TimeTrex will automatically dump the database on a nightly basis for you, so you don't need to shutdown the database or carry out any additional tasks.

Ok, If someone in entering date in timetrex at the same time timetrex is doing his automatic database backup.
Could this corrupt the database ?

I know there's not very few chances that someone fill a timesheet in the night and at the exact same time timetrex backup the database but I jst want to make sure :P

It might happens that employee fill a timesheet in the night.

Thank's

No, if the database is performing a proper database dump for backup purposes, using TimeTrex or modifying the database while this happens will not corrupt it at all.

If you just copied the raw database files themselves, then the backup would be corrupt, but as long as you do a proper database dump to a .SQL file, its fine.

v3.0 of TimeTrex automatically makes these .SQL files for you, so you can just copy the TimeTrex directory for backup purposes, because those .SQL files are included in it. The restore procedure would include restoring the entire TimeTrex directory then restoring the latest .SQL dump file as well to ensure that the database is not corrupted.
