User ID as session variable.

I am in the process of adding a custom module to Timetrex provides jobs that are required by the employees that day from their supervisors and items that they must sign off on. I would like to save their user id as a session variable when they login so that the custom module knows who they are dealing with. Can someone maybe show me a way to accomplish this task or provide a better solution. Thanks for all the help.
